Volkswagen had showcased the 5-seater Tiguan SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo. We even flew to Berlin in April this year to drive the new Tiguan. We had revealed that the Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to arrive on our shores sometime by early 2017. And now the new VW Tiguan has been caught testing near Pune.
The test mule was spotted without any camouflage which suggests that we can expect the Tiguan to arrive in VW showrooms soon. The 2016 Tiguan is the first SUV from VW that is based on the MQB modular platform. Compared to the previous-generation model, the new Tiguan is around 50 kilograms lighter. At 2,681mm, it gets a 77mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor.
Globally, the new Tiguan is offered with a petrol and a diesel engine in different states of tune. The Tiguan model showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo was the 2.0-litre petrol version. This 4-cylinder turbocharged unit makes 180PS and is coupled to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. In Berlin, we drove the 2.0 TDI version which makes 150PS and 340Nm of torque. The diesel mill too gets mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is offered in front-wheel as well as all-wheel drive variants.
The Tiguan 4Motion all-wheel drive version gets the fifth-generation Haldex coupling which distributes torque between the front or all four wheels depending on the need. It offers 200mm of ground clearance and different on- and off-road modes to choose from. Once launched, the Volkswagen Tiguan will compete against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. It is expected to be priced around Rs 30 lakh.
