Tech spec comparo: 2019 Honda Civic vs Toyota Corolla Altis vs Hyundai Elantra vs Skoda Octavia

Honda launched the 2019 Civic in the Indian market and the sedan is priced between Rs 17.69 lakh and Rs 22.29 lakh. The Japanese sedan is offered with a choice of 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

Honda Civic
The petrol engine comes mated to a CVT (continuously variable transmission) exclusively, and the diesel engine comes with a six-speed manual only. The petrol engine produces 141PS at 6,500rpm and 174Nm of torque at 4,300rpm. The diesel engine is capable of producing 120PS at 4,000rpm and 300Nm of torque from 2,000rpm.

The steering mechanism for the Civic is electrically assisted and has a turning radius of 5.85 metres. The executive sedan gets MacPherson Strut, Coil Spring in the front and Multilink, Coil Spring in the rear. The Civic gets disc brakes for all four wheels and has 17-inch alloys in the top trims.

The overall length of the car is 4656mm and 1799mm wide. The Civic is a low slung sedan and has an overall height of 1433mm. The cargo space in the sedan is 430-litresThe V and the VX trim are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels (215/55 R16), however, the ZX trim gets a size up (215/50 R17). The petrol variant tips the scale at 1300 kgs and the diesel Honda Civic weighs 53 kgs more (1353kgs).

Toyota Corolla Altis

The Corolla Altis is the other Japanese contender in the segment and has a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel engine on offer. The former produces 140PS at 6,400rpm and 173Nm of torque at 4,000rpm while the latter one makes 88PS at 3,800rpm and 205Nm of torque at 1,800rpm. The sedan is offered with the option of a six-speed manual and a seven-step CVT (continuously variable transmission) for the petrol variant. However, the diesel variant is limited to a six-speed manual only. The car is equipped with independent suspension in the front and a torsion beam in the rear. The Toyota Corolla has a similar wheelbase as the Honda Civic which is 2,700mm long and has 470L of cargo space which is 40L more than the Civic

Hyundai Elantra

The Korean D-segment sedan is also offered with two engine options, 2.0-litre petrol, and a 1.6-litre diesel. The former one produces 152PS at 6,200rpm and 196Nm at 4,000rpm while the latter one produces 128PS at 4,000rpm and 265Nm of torque at 1,900rpm. Both the engines are offered with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic. The wheelbase of the Elantra is 2,700mm which is the same as the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

Skoda Octavia

The Skoda Octavia is currently available in both diesel and petrol fuel choices and offers options of three engines - 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The former ones produce 150PS at 5,000rpm and 180PS at 5,100rpm respectively and the latter one produces 143PS at 3,500rpm. The torque numbers are relatively higher as the Octavia is the only one in the segment which offers turbocharged petrol engines, that said the 1.4-litre and the 1.8-litre both generate a torque number of 250Nm at 1,500rpm while the diesel engine makes the highest torque number of 320Nm at 1,750rpm. The 1.8-litre variant of the Octavia gets an all-independent suspension setup whereas the others have independent suspension in the front and a torsion beam setup similar to its rivals.
