The Automotive Research Association of India formulates regulations for automotive recalls

A few weeks back, we reported that the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) plans to set up a new crash test facility at Chakan, near Pune. Alongside the new facility, the ARAI is also in the process of putting in place new regulations. These will pan across the various aspects like safety, emissions, fuel efficiency, manufacturing etc. A part of these is a set of regulations for automotive recalls as well.

In the past few years, automobile manufacturers like Nissan, Renault, Honda, Ford, Toyota, and more recently, Maruti Suzuki have been in the news for recalling their vehicles over various issues and concerns. From addressing minor software glitches to rectifying major manufacturing defects or design flaws, the automakers seem to be taking recall policies seriously to improve the customer satisfaction for their brands. However, there aren’t many laws or regulations to ensure the identification of such issues, the enforcement of recalls and/or their proper execution. The ARAI aims to fix that with the new regulations.
