In a recent effort to improve road safety, Maharashtra's state transport department has decided that violators of traffic rules will not get away with simple slap on the wrist fines. Effective immediately, the traffic police have been given the authority to seize and suspend the driver's licences of violators for three months. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has stationed 30 teams containing officers from the traffic police department and the RTO, across important junctions in the city.

Gixxer vs Avenger traffic

If you're caught jumping a red light, speaking on the phone while driving or driving under influence, you could be left using public transport for the following three months. The traffic police will hand the licence over to the RTO inspector, who will then suspend it accordingly. However, if you're caught driving without your seatbelt fastened or riding without a helmet (pillion rider included), they have something special in store for you â€" drumroll â€" a compulsory two-hour counselling session on road safety. These sessions will be held in batches with the help of an NGO and violators will have to wait at the counselling centre till a certain number of violators have been caught and directed there.

These new rules were initially implemented in Delhi, where the traffic police seized and suspended over 11,000 DLs in 10 days.
