Unveiled Honda 1.6l i-DTEC diesel engine
This isn't any other engine that manufacturers keep releasing details about. This is the mighty H's new 120PS 300Nm 1.6l diesel engine from its Earth Dreams family. It is made of an aluminium cylinder head which is joined to an aluminium block. Honda claims that this is the lightest engine in its category and weighs 47kg less than its own 2.2l diesel powerplant. The engineers were briefed to reduce the mechanical friction of the diesel engine and bring it on par with those of conventional petrol powered ones. Also a component of this engine, the new fourth-gen turbocharger from Garrett has a variable-nozzle design with the speed of the turbo being governed electronically for minimal lag and maximum fuel efficiency. Honda says that they can make 500 of these diesel engines every day at their UK manufacturing plant. Not bad figures by any chance. The European Civic will be the first car in Honda's lineup to sport this engine. Will we see this engine in India? Yes, we are getting the toned-down 1.5l diesel under the hood of the Amaze (Brio sedan), Brio and then the Jazz. Later on in the City as well. So the wait continues till early 2013 then.
