Volkswagen AG likely to discontinue over 40 models

20 Jun 2016 / 0

To cope with the aftermath of the Volkswagen emission scandal, Volkswagen AG is likely to discontinue production of over 40 models. According to a report published by German newspaper Handelsblatt, the exact number of models that will be discontinued hasn’t been decided yet. As of now, Volkswagen AG’s product line-up includes over 300 models across its multiple brands.

Post the emission scandal, Volkswagen AG has been working on a new strategy to overhaul itself and improve its image. As a part of its new ‘Together – Strategy 2025’, the company will be focusing more on electric as well as autonomous vehicles. The company is hopeful that this will help deal with the effects of the emission scandal which apart from damaging the brand’s reputation and affecting sales has resulted in numerous lawsuits.

According to the report, the large number of car models makes it difficult for the carmaker to manage their production, and the sales performance of some of the models is below average. The company is planning to introduce over 30 electric vehicles in the next 10 years which will help it accelerate sales to around two to three million units.

Volkswagen AG owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Scania, Skoda, Seat and Man.
