Yamaha India recalls 902 units of YZF-R3

Team OD Updated: July 18, 2016, 06:36 PM IST

Around two weeks ago, Yamaha Japan had recalled around 1500 units of the YZF-R3 motorcycle. The manufacturer had stated that the recall was being issued to fix issues with the oil pump and clutch pressure plate assembly. The Yamaha YZF-R3 is sold in India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit with the components arriving from Japan. This means the Indian R3 motorcycles were likely to suffer from the same issue.

At that time we had contacted Yamaha India and they had stated that the issue was being investigated and nothing was confirmed. Today, they have released an official statement confirming that the same issue exists in some of motorcycles with certain production numbers which were sold in India. Yamaha India has announced a recall of 902 units of the YZF-R3.

According to the motorcycle manufacturer, the oil pump has a design flaw which could restrict it from functioning properly. The company says that no safety related issues have been reported from owners in India. On the affected motorcycles, the company's authorised workshops will replace the faulty parts free of cost.

In an official release, the company has stated that 'the recall is a reiteration of Yamaha's commitment to safety and this action is not a result of complaints from customers'. The company is still sorting out details like which batches are affected and how they will reach out to owners of the affected vehicles. We will update you as and when Yamaha India reveals more information.
