Spec comparison: Maruti Celerio diesel vs Chevrolet Beat diesel vs Hyundai Grand i10 diesel
Maruti has just unveiled the Celerio diesel. While this wouldn't be surprising considering that Maruti would have used the Fiat-derived MultiJet motor for the Celerio, the company chose to get its own diesel engine. So Maruti Celerio has an in-house developed diesel engine - a two-cylinder all-aluminium 800cc unit which makes nearly 48PS of power and 125Nm of torque. Like its petrol counterpart, there are four variants and only the ZDi(O) gets dual airbags and ABS.
But the Celerio's unit isn't the only small capacity motor around. Sure, it is the smallest but then there is the Chevrolet Beat diesel which, at 1,000cc, was the smallest unit for quite some time. This engine was jointly developed by General Motors and Fiat and makes 10PS more than the Celerio diesel. Meanwhile, the other small diesel, the Hyundai Grand i10 uses a 1.1-litre motor to make 71PS of power. So, how will the Celerio diesel hold its own against more powerful competition? See the table below to see how it fares.
