2020 Mahindra Scorpio SUV spied testing in India, to take on new-gen Hyundai Creta
Mahindra and Mahindra have started working on their new-gen offerings that will take on the new BSVI emission norms scheduled to come in effect in April 2020. One of these will be the new-gen Scorpio SUV. The company has started testing the 2020 Scorpio which has been spotted in Chengalpattu, which also happens to be the location for the Mahindra Research Valley. This upcoming version of the SUV will get a thorough revamp in design and features. Most importantly, the 2020 Scorpio will be based on an all-new platform that could be powered by a new 2-litre turbodiesel engine. When launched next year, the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will rival the Hyundai Creta in India.
From the looks of it, the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will be much larger in terms of dimensions. The SUV is expected to gain additional length, width and also height. Even the wheelbase might be stretched out. Since the Mahindra Marazzo MPV already gets a new platform and the same is expected to underpin the upcoming Mahindra Thar, we believe Mahindra could look at the using the same for the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio. While the test mule seen in the images here is heavily camouflaged, the larger and pronounced radiator grille can be seen clearly. The bonnet also gets a redesigned profile. To the side, the wheel arches appear more squared similar to the Mahindra XUV300 while the window line gets a flowing profile neat the C-Pillar. The test car was spotted with steel wheels which hint of it being the base or the mid-spec model. Even the rear profile has been redesigned. We hope Mahindra-backed Pininfarina plays a major role in the styling department, as our hopes are really high especially post the unveiling of their first supercar, the Battista.
The cabin layout and features of the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio are expected to get a much more premium treatment than what we've seen in the SUV. Here too the Italian design house could have a strong say. Be it premium materials for dash and seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob or the tech laden touchscreen infotainment system with CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity system. Also, the larger dimensions should also contribute to more headroom, legroom and shoulderoom to better the comfort value of the SUV.
Presently, Mahindra Scorpio is offered with a choice between two engines, m2DICR 2.5L and mHawk 2.2L. The 2.5L unit makes 75PS at 3,200rpm and produces 200Nm at 1,400-2200rpm, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, 2.2L that produces 120PS at 4,000rpm and generates 280Nm at 1,800â€"2,800rpm. The higher state of tune of this engine makes 140PS at 3,750rpm and churns 320Nm at 1,500-2,800rpm, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio could be powered by an all-new 2-litre turbo diesel engine which will be BSVI compliant.
