2021 Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in final production form
Unless you have locked yourself away from the world of auto, you would be aware that Skoda and Volkswagen are planning to take on the Korean duo of the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos with two, stylish compact crossovers - the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun. The Kushaq has been spied on multiple occasions and we even had a go at a fully camouflaged prototype a few weeks back, but now the test mules have been joined on their road tests by their German sibling.
The Taigun spied here seems to be running in its final production form. Of course, the design has been no secret, because at the 2020 Auto Expo VW had proudly shown off the Taigun in near-production glory, unlike the Skoda Kushaq, which was shown to us as the bold Vision IN concept.
Whatever details are visible on the heavily camouflaged VW Taigun test mule, confirm that the final production car will don twin-pot LED headlamps, LED taillights and an LED/reflective strip running across the length of the tailgate for that premium appeal established by the more expensive cars in the VW Group's portfolio. The front fog lamps will have a halogen treatment and will sit in a wide and prominent housing surrounded by a honeycomb mesh grille, as promised by last year's show car.
A heavily camouflaged cabin hints that the Taigun will come with body-coloured inserts in the dashboard, with matching bezels around the A/C vents and the tunnel console, as showcased by the show car. The Tagiun will get touchscreen infotainment with integrated connected features and will be complemented by a fully-digital instrument cluster.
To make the battle with the Koreans even more interesting, the Taigun will get two petrol engine options. At the base will be a 1.0l three-cylinder turbo-petrol with a 115PS/200Nm output, while the range-topping variant will use the 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbo-petrol with an output of 150PS/250Nm. Automatic options for both the engines will come by way of a 6-speed torque converter and a 7-speed DSG respectively. As a part of the group's strategy for India, there will be no diesel options on offer.
The Volkswagen Taigun is likely to be priced under Rs 10 lakh for the base variant, which the top-end trim likely to stretch beyond Rs 19 lakh. With a wheelbase of 2,651mm and an overall length of 4,216mm, the Taigun is a size smaller than the T-Roc, which was recently re-introduced in the Indian market with a price tag of Rs 21.35 lakh. VW has confirmed that the Taigun will hit the market in the second half of 2021.
