2025 Nissan R35 GT-R debuts in Japan for potentially the last time

It's been 17 years since we first witnessed the launch of the R35-generation Nissan GT-R and the Japanese supercar continues to solider on as Nissan has refreshed the car for 2025. Although this could be the last time the car gets any updates, the GT-R will forever a special corner in the hearts of the automotive community. The 2025 GT-R portfolio includes two thrilling editions: the Premium Edition T-spec and the Track Edition designed by Nismo.

While it doesn't look worlds apart from the car that debuted in 2007, Nissan has made incremental modifications each year to keep Godzilla feeling new. Nismo's GT-R Premium Edition T-spec and GT-R Track Edition now have weight-balanced connecting rods, piston rings, and crankshafts.

Both variants have aluminium 'takumi' (meaning artisan) nameplates that relate to the twin-turbo V6 engines, which are handbuilt by a small team of craftsman in a dust-proof area at Nissan's Yokohama plant. There are also gold-coloured plaques in the engine bay.

Aside from that, the  GT-R remains unchanged, with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, variable four-wheel drive, and Bilstein adaptive dampers. The Nismo retains its custom chassis configuration, which includes a front limited-slip differential, a more aggressive aero, a stronger shell, and carbon fibre body panels. The primary mechanical changes include beefier carbon ceramic brakes and forged 20-inch wheels.

The twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 delivers the same 573 PS and 633Nm of torque in the regular GT-R and 608PS and 652Nm of torque in the Nismo flagship.

As yet, Nissan has not officially committed to a powertrain strategy for the R36, but considering hybrid powertrains' global success, we think that could be a path Nissan would venture into. The electrification of the iconic GT-R is inevitable which is why we hope Nissan tries to deliver a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the car for the future.

The completely electric Nissan Hyper Force concept at the Japan Mobility Show hinted at the next phase in the GT-R's evolution. According to reports, the Hyper Force concept design might be put into production before 2030, perhaps letting the R35 continue manufacturing for a few more years.
