Audi simplifies the nomenclature of its models

Audi has come up with a new explanation for the nomenclature of its models. This changes the numeral values in the name, from representing the engine capacity to now representing power output. Audi says the these numeral designations stand for that model's specific power output. However, the names for the models, ranging from Audi A1 to Audi Q7, will remain unchanged.

The reference value for the new designations is the power output of the individual model in kilowatts. There are further sub-classifications which define the range of power output that each designation represents. For instance, the number "30" will appear on models with power outputs between 81 and 96kW (110-130PS). Similarly, "45" represents power outputs between 169 and 185kW (230-252PS) and so on. Models with power output of more 400kW (543PS) and above will carry "70" in their name. These numerals will appear along with the name of powerplant technology at the back of the car - TFSI, TDI, g-tron or e-tron.

Designating a model based on its engine displacement solely was seeming dysfunctional since same capacity engines had varying power outputs. The adaptation of electric drive technologies demanded a different designation system too, which could have become redundantly confusing. The new designation unifies the the nomenclature and will make it easy for the customer to identify a model based solely on its power output and powertrain technology. This might also help the audience get a clearer picture of where a model sits in the hierarchy.

According to the new nomenclature, the models will initially range from Audi A1 25 TFSI with 70kW (95PS) to the Audi A8 55 TFSI with 250kW (340PS), with the numeral values separated by a difference of five. However, this new nomenclature won't be applicable to the out and out performance models in the line-up such as the S, RS and the R8. These will still be known by their regular names.

Till now Audi has also deferred giving the tags to its recently unveiled Q5 as well as A8. The new Audi A8 generation launching in foreign markets later this year will be the first one to carry the updated nomenclature. Audi will change the designations of the remaining models in the current product range mid of next year.

When Audi first announced this nomenclature sometime in 2014, they created a lot of confusion. There was no explanation as to how the numerals added up. This new definition to the nomenclature clears up a lot of things though most of us will still have to look at the spec sheet to know the power figures of the vehicle in question.
