Audi unveil the futuristic skysphere concept

Audi is no stranger to futuristic designs and now they have just gone ahead to blow our minds even further. The German company has introduced the Audi skysphere concept, the first of a new series of concept vehicles. A stunning electric-powered two-door convertible with lines that harken back to the Audi design of the future.

The Audi skysphere concept demonstrates how the company is redefining luxury in the future - it's not just about driving anymore. The concept automobile was created with the goal of providing its passengers with engaging and world-class experiences.

The Audi skysphere idea was developed for two separate driving experiences: a grand touring experience and a sports experience, to provide passengers the utmost freedom possible. Electric motors and a complex mechanism with sliding body and frame components allow the car's wheelbase and external length to be adjusted by 250 millimetres. Simultaneously, the ground clearance of the car is increased by 10 millimetres to improve comfort and driving dynamics.

The Audi skysphere concept will make its public premiere on the renowned fairways of Pebble Beach golf course on August 13, 2021, as part of Monterey Car Week.

The driver can take advantage of their freedom and choose their own driving experience with the touch of a button. They can either pilot their 4.94-meter-long e-roadster themselves in "Sports" mode with a reduced wheelbase, or they may opt to be chauffeured in a 5.19-meter GT in the self-driving "Grand Touring" mode with maximum legroom. With its sensor system, the Audi skysphere keeps an eye on the road and traffic and securely transports the occupants to their destination.

The interior design presents a fresh, modern vision of luxury, while digitalization and the ecosystem provide passengers with unparalleled degrees of freedom and access to new realms of experience. The options are virtually infinite due to Audi's own services and the ability to connect digital services.

The vehicle also handles tedious duties by itself. Audi claims that the autonomous Audi skysphere concept, will pick up passengers with information about their present location and manages to park and charge itself.

Power is delivered to the wheels of the Audi skysphere by an electric motor located on the powered back axle. The roadster, which weighs about 1,800 kilogrammes, produces 632PS and 750 Nm of torque. The battery is likely to have a capacity of more than 80 kWh, giving the car a WLTP range of more than 500 kilometres, at least in the economical GT mode.

Audi is utilising three concept vehicles to demonstrate its vision of progressive luxury: the Audi skysphere, Audi grandsphere, and, coming in 2022, Audi urbansphere. Audi is building a vehicle experience that extends well beyond simply getting from point A to point B, and even beyond the driving experience itself.
