Bengaluru gets India's first EV battery & charger test centre

In order to accelerate Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi recently laid the foundation stone of a testing facility at the National Test House (NTH) in Jakkur, Bengaluru. This move aims to boost India's EV ecosystem by offering comprehensive testing services crucial for the industry's growth. In addition to Bengaluru, NTH is also set to establish similar facilities in Mumbai and Kolkata soon.

The NTH will utilise advanced technology to carry out various tests, including electrical safety, battery efficiency, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall performance. These tests are crucial for ensuring that EVs meet the required safety and quality standards before their market launch. Apart from that, a satellite centre is being set up at the RRSL Jakkur campus in Bengaluru to further improve testing capabilities, particularly in the areas of EV battery and charger testing.

Mr Joshi highlighted the strategic importance of this facility, particularly for the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) industry in South India, especially in Bengaluru. The establishment of this testing facility near key players in the EV battery and charger manufacturing sector is expected to be a game-changer for the industry. He also said that the new facility will also accelerate their development cycles by allowing them to conduct crucial tests locally, rather than relying on facilities in other regions or countries.

The facility is part of a larger plan to strengthen the infrastructure needed for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in India. It is expected to provide significant support to EV manufacturers, especially in southern India, by offering crucial resources for testing and quality assurance.
