BMW Group India reports highest-ever first-half, quarterly, and monthly sales
German automotive giant BMW Group achieved record-breaking sales figures for the first half, quarter, and month in India in 2023. The company sold a total of 5,867 cars, encompassing both BMW and MINI brands, as well as 4,667 motorcycles between January and June this year. Remarkably, the group's sales in the first six months of 2023 were eleven times higher compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, BMW Group's production plans for the current calendar year include the introduction of 22 vehicles, comprising brand-new models, facelifts, and variants across BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad.
During the first half of this year, BMW delivered 5,476 units, exhibiting a growth rate of 5.5 percent compared to the first six months of 2022. SUVs accounted for 50 percent of the total sales, with the all-new X1 emerging as the best-selling BMW model, contributing to over 20 percent of the overall sales. In fact, the X1 has witnessed unprecedented demand since its launch and currently boasts a waiting period of three months. Additionally, the 3 Series Grand Limousine became the top-selling saloon for the automaker, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the sales. The high-performance M340i also experienced a significant increase in popularity, with a year-on-year growth rate of 232 percent.
Furthermore, BMW highlights that its battery electric vehicles (BEVs) hold a 50 percent market share according to VAHAN data. Between January and June this year, the automaker delivered 46 percent more electric vehicles compared to the same period in 2022. BMW proudly claims that the all-electric iX is currently the best-selling luxury car in the Indian market's battery electric vehicle segment. The average waiting period for BMW's EVs ranges from four to six months. Additionally, sales of BMW Luxury Class (GKL) vehicles, such as the 7 Series, XM hybrid, i7, and X7, witnessed an impressive year-on-year rise of 128 percent in 2023. The company also stated that demand for the i7 has been exceptional.
MINI India Sales in 2023MINI, the subsidiary of BMW, achieved a three percent growth with 391 units sold in the first six months of this year compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. The locally assembled Countryman accounted for over 60 percent of the total sales, while the MINI Hatch contributed 20 percent. Interestingly, the all-electric MINI SE became the third-largest contributor to the overall sales, achieving a 14 percent share within just one year of its launch.
BMW Motorrad India Sales in 2023
Similar to BMW and MINI, BMW Motorrad India experienced an increase in sales during the first half of 2023. The G 310 models, including the G 310 GS, G 310 R, and the new G 310 RR, constituted 90 percent of the total sales. The motorcycle manufacturer sold approximately 2,000 units of the G 310 RR in the first six months, with a total of 4,000 units delivered since its launch in July 2022.
In addition to the impressive sales figures, the BMW Group has planned the launch of 22 new models in the Indian market, including 16 BMW models, 3 MINI models, and 2 Motorrad models. These forthcoming offerings consist of eight all-new vehicles, four facelifts, and ten variants.
