BMW i5 undergoes rigorous winter testing in Sweden
BMW just revealed the first official teaser image of the future all-electric i5, and now the company has shared photographs of the sedan undergoing "the ultimate endurance test." The i5 EV has officially finished winter tests in Arjeplog, Sweden, after a year of intense testing, ahead of its global debut in October 2023.
The test mules in these images reveal important details about the design of the i5 EV as well as the eighth-generation 5 Series. The sedan has a more pronounced nose with a redesigned kidney "grille" at the front, the ICE sedan will have a front grille, but this should be partially covered in the EV. The bumper features a huge lower air vent with a splitter at its base.
In the back, the i5 sports a muscular rear bumper and the taillights are split units with sophisticated LED lighting components.
BMW can provide numerous powertrain options for the 5-Series thanks to a flexible design that allows the car to employ an ICE, plug-in hybrid, or fully-electric powertrain without the requirement for a separate architecture for electrified powertrains.
The i5 is an important aspect of BMW's transformation into an electric vehicle manufacturer. In its 2023 sales report, the company stated that it hoped that EVs will account for 15 percent of its sales in 2023. BMW wants to sell seven million plug-in hybrid and pure-electric vehicles by the end of 2030, with the new 5 Series offering a choice of ICE, hybrid, and EV powertrains.
For its future iteration, the M5 will also use a plug-in hybrid engine. The M5 PHEV will employ a variant of the electrified setup that is expected to come in the next BMW XM.
