BMW India to locally assemble upcoming X7 and X4 SUVs
BMW India recently announced that it will begin to locally manufacture the upcoming X4 coupe SUV and the new X7 SUV flagship. The firm already manufactures the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series GT, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series GT, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3, the BMW X5 and the MINI Countryman at its plant in Chennai.
This development comes in the backdrop of BMW Group India recording its highest sales ever. It sold 10,405 units clocking 11 per cent growth, on the back of successes like the new BMW 5 Series and the 6 Series GT. Its locally produced SUVs contributed to 50 per cent of the sales, led by the X3. The MINI arm also grew well, it sold 700 units at 66 per cent growth. The MINI Hatch and the now locally-produced MINI Countryman together commanded a share of over 60 per cent in MINI sales.
The X7 flagship SUV is set to be launched in India soon, with the M50d variant already being listed on the company's website. The less powerful petrol and diesels will follow after that. The X4's launch also seems imminent, with uncamouflaged test mules having been spotted in the country. The X4 is closely related to the X3 and should come with similar engines and equipment.
