BMW to pull the plug on its 12-cylinder engine this year with a limited edition M760i xDrive

Maybe in a perfect world, we wouldn't have seen this coming, but it's no secret that petrol-powered 12-cylinders were never going to survive the electrification of vehicles. BMW have digested this fact and have decided to seize production of its 12-cylinder engine this year and a limited edition M760i xDrive will be the last ever BMW to feature the iconic BMW V12.

BMW is sending the V12 out in style with "The Final V12", as the name suggests. That means adding a little bling to a dozen M760i xDrives in the form of badges, wheels and the buyer's choice of BMW Individual leather and paint. Also, pre-checking the majority of the options on the list.

Inside, the limited edition cars will have BMW Individual Piano Black Finish trim, a plaque honouring the vehicle as "1 OF 12," and "THE FINAL V12" sill plates. The engine cover will also have the same design.

The M760i is powered by BMW's twin-turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 engine, which produces 601PS. It allows the car to reach speeds of 100 kmph in under 3.6 seconds, demonstrating how far engine technology has progressed since BMW's first V12 engine appeared in 1987.

The first BMW V12 engine dates back to 1987 when BMW used a 5-litre unit that produced 295PS.

BMW will approach clients who have owned a V12 7 Series for a long time with an opportunity to buy the final V12 model. The base price for the 2022 M760i xDrive sedan will be 200,000 US Dollars. BMW will give buyers a custom-built desk trophy particular to their vehicle once they accept possession. Production in the United States will begin in June, with deliveries slated to begin in July.
