Car sales February 2021: Tata Motors sells 27,225 cars, highest monthly haul in 9 years
Tata Motors has continued its strong sales run in the passenger car segment into February 2021. The company sold 27,225 cars last month, 1 per cent higher than the previous month's 26,978 unit haul but a massive 119 per cent more than the 12,430 cars it sold in February 2020. This is also the highest monthly sales number for Tata Motor in almost nine years.
The strong showing for Tata Motors has come from its new range of BSVI offerings led by the Tata Altroz. The significant updates to cars like the Harrier, Nexon, Tiago and Tigor have helped the carmaker claw back significant ground. The Nexon EV has been a notable success too, despite low absolute numbers. It is now the largest selling EV in the country. Adding to this line-up is the new Tata Safari, the three-row iteration of the Harrier that has just gone on sale. The strong selling Tata Altroz range has also been broadened with the introduction of the Altroz iTurbo with more features and a turbo petrol engine option.
The Altroz iTurbo is powered by a detuned version of the three-cylinder 1.2-litre turbo-petrol from the Nexon. The motor makes 110PS at 5,500rpm and 140 Nm at 1,500- 5,500 rpm and pairs with a five-speed manual gearbox, instead of the six-speed in the Nexon. The Altroz iTurbo also features City and Sport drive modes, replacing the Eco mode in the other engine options. Prices start from Rs 7.73 lakh and go up to Rs 8.86 lakh. The Safari is 63mm longer than the Harrier, incorporating a stepped roof and a reworked rear section to accommodate the third row of seats. he width(1894mm) and wheelbase(2741mm) remain unchanged from the Harrier, although the new SUV is a bit taller at 1,786mm (80m more). The same 2.0-litre FCA-sourced Multijet diesel engine from the Harrier, which Tata calls Kryotec, is fitted to the Safari with 172PS and 350Nm.
