Chevrolet announces commitment to supporting existing Indian customers
Chevrolet has re-affirmed its commitment to existing Indian customers, promising after-sales support and spares availability 'through 2021 and beyond'. While the brand had ceased domestic operations at the end of 2017, it had continued export production at the General Motors plant in Talegaon, near Pune.
Amidst COVID-19 disruptions last year, and the falling through of the deal to sell the plant to Chinese-manufacturer Great Wall Motors, GM had taken the decision to shut down the plant as of Christmas eve 2020. The Talegaon facility is said to have been used for producing Chevrolet Beats for export consumption before its closure, as well as spares for other vehicles, and the company is hopeful yet that a deal can be worked out with GWM to provide job opportunities at the site.Â
Chevrolet currently has an after-sales and support network of 165 service centres, and 20 parts distributors spread across 142 cities in India. Service camps, including a novel 'zero labour' initiative are said to be planned to continue in 2021 to ensure existing Chevrolet customers can keep their vehicles on the road, and in good condition. According to Indian regulations, off-the-shelf availability of spares is mandated, for vehicles up to 10 years after the last date of manufacture.
