Citroen set to globally unveil e-C4 pure-electric crossover on June 30
Mark your calendars for June 30. It's the date that Citroen will be taking the wraps off the e-C4, the next-gen C4 available with an all-electric powertrain for the first time. The new C4 model is considered very important for the future of Citroen, but may not be made available in India in the coming years, with Citroen instead pinning hopes on its made-for-India platform, under the C-Cubed program.
The new-gen C4 is based on the company's new Common Modular Platform (CMP) developed for PSA Group's new small cars, which can accommodate both hybrid and electric drivetrains. The new model will be sleeker, and more along the lines of a coupe-crossover, than the C4/C4 Cactus (based on the PF1 architecture) with its hatchback-like proportions.
Spy shots of the vehicle also hint at a larger footprint than the current C4 Cactus, which measures in around 4.1m from front to rear. Also hinted at, is the signature Citroen face, while it looks to ride marginally higher than the car it will replace. It will also be made available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, alongside the electric variant; we expect those to range from the 1.2-litre petrol to 1.6-litre diesel that's currently available in the PSA Group's lineup.
The electric drivetrain is expected to be derived from what's already in electric versions of other PSA Group cars, like the Peugeot e-2008 and DS 3 Crossback E-Tense. Those cars use a 134PS electric motor combined with a 50kWh battery pack, and offer a driving range of up to 320km on a single charge. The e-C4 will align with Citroen's plan of offering an electrified version of every vehicle in their lineup by 2025, and the company tells us this move holds good for India as well.
As you may recall, the C5 Aircross will be the first model for Citroen in India, and you can read our review of the C5 Aircross here. While the C5 Aircross was originally slated for a reveal in India in September of this year, the pandemic has forced that date back, to early-2021. Meanwhile, development on the company's first made-for-India platform, part of the C-Cubed program, is said to be on track. The first product on that platform is likely to be a sub-4m SUV, which will be launched in 2021, shortly after the C5 Aircross.
