COVID19 impact: 2022 Auto Expo postponed until further notice
The SIAM has announced that the upcoming 2022 Auto Expo, originally scheduled to be held between February 2 - 9, 2022, has been postponed indefinitely. The organisers believe the risk of COVID19 spreading in a B2C show like the Auto Expo is very high and with the large crowds the event usually attracts, maintaining social distancing will be difficult.
SIAM also went on to say that there is still no clear view on how the COVID19 situation will progress in the country, with the threat of a third wave still quite strong. Another reason for the deferment of the event is that organising the vent needs a lead time of at least a year.
The auto industry expects to hold the Expo in a manner that will allow the most number of people to be a part of the event which is in the current situation isn't possible. A revised date for the 2022 Auto Expo will be finalized later this year.
The Auto Expo debuted in 1986 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The nine-day show is an event providing a window for technological growth and promoting indigenous constructed concepts. Over the years, the show grew from strength to strength and by 2006, it had begun to see new launches, concept vehicles, and huge overseas participation and in 2008, it was accredited by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles (OICA). The last edition in 2020 saw numerous highlights with the Great Wall Motors brand debuting, along with big reveals from Hyundai, Kia, Tata Motors and Mercedes-Benz.
