Ducati's Enea Bastianini wins British GP; Martin takes Championship lead from Bagnaia
Enea Bastianini from the Ducati Lenovo Team claimed victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix, marking his second win as a factory Ducati rider. Jorge Martin from Prima Pramac Racing finished second and took the lead in the championship by three points over Francesco Bagnaia of the factory Ducati team. MotoGP noted that Bastianini became the 10th different rider to win at Silverstone in the last ten events.
Francesco Bagnaia got off to a strong start, taking the lead ahead of Bastianini and Martin. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing), who started from pole, dropped to fourth after a shuffle, with Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing) briefly moving past him before settling into fifth.
Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) had to retire early because of an issue at the start. Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Racing) also crashed out on the opening lap. Bagnaia led initially, but Martin quickly passed both him and Bastianini. Bastianini then dropped to fourth as Espargaro moved up. Marquez stayed close as the top five began to separate from the rest.
With six laps to go, Martin held a lead of seven-tenths of a second. Bastianini gradually closed the gap and made his move on the penultimate lap when Martin went wide at Turn 3. Then, Bastianini won the British Grand Prix with a strong final lap, finishing ahead of Martin and his teammate Bagnaia.
After an exciting weekend at the Silverstone, MotoGP will head to the Motorrad Grand Prix von Osterreich in two weeks.
