Product Review: Astar SMX-2 Air Carbon
The Alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbonàgloves replace my Axo Pro Race glovesàthat I've been using for the past year. TheàSMX-2s are quite a bit more expensive âÂ"àdouble the cost to be precise and we'll get toàwhether they are worth the money in a bit.àFirst off- a brief description. These glovesàare neither short cuff like the Axos or a fullàrace style gauntlet but sit somewhere inàbetween which is perfect for the street useàthey are intended for. They look the part tooàwith an all black leather and mesh constructionàwith some white detailing. The topàof the gloves are a mix of fabric mesh andàleather while the palms consist of syntheticàleather along with clarino reinforcements.
The main knuckle protector is a large carbonÃÂ fibre guard that looks the part, both inÃÂ terms of form and function. The finger tipsÃÂ feature small silicon globules to give youÃÂ more traction on the levers but I wonderÃÂ how long they will last. I also like the largeÃÂ and firm Velcro wrist clasp that's easy toÃÂ use with a gloved hand gives you a firmÃÂ fit. Overall the gloves are light and provideÃÂ excellent ventilation when on the move.ÃÂ However I wasn't exactly thrilled withÃÂ the fit. The gloves don't sit as comfortablyÃÂ on the hand as I'd have liked and despiteÃÂ being snug when first worn IÃÂ found the gloves tightenÃÂ around the little fingerÃÂ and webbing ofÃÂ the thumb whenÃÂ actually riding.
The gloves haveÃÂ opened up in theÃÂ past ten days thatÃÂ I've used them andÃÂ I expect them toÃÂ get more comfortableÃÂ as they stretchÃÂ but I'd advise youÃÂ to try a size largerÃÂ before you make aÃÂ decision. Overall theÃÂ gloves look good andÃÂ are practical for city runÃÂ abouts but you will get much better optionsÃÂ at the rather high price point.
