Product review: At 61 Degrees
Mike Martin's book is about a british chap called Aaron Rose. Written in the first person, the protagonist Rose is an enthusiastic motorcyclist who begins out riding fast UK roads with friends. The rides turn into racing and Rose finds a mentor who sees his potential and puts him to work as a racer.
Through this, Rose is quite likeable because he never loses the sense of wonder at this amazing progression of fortuitous events that are altering his life. Rose turns out to be very good at racing and one day, he finds himself signed up for MotoGP atTriumph's new MotoGP team, to race Rossi, his racing hero. The next bit is the most interesting - Rose finding his feet in the paddock, learning the ropes and so forth. But it's a vast book and you have to put up with a fair amount of pages that, had they been edited down or out, would have been a crisper tale. But it's right at the end that the book takes a wild, wild turn and as shocking as the plot turn is, it, for me, damages the story so far. The book had the potential to be a fantasy tale of an everyman rider making it in MotoGP. But by the end, it's too long, the plot's gone somewhere else… We had trouble finishing this book.
