Product Review: ViaTerra Claw luggage bag
The biggest concern when goingÃÂ touring on a motorcycle is carrying yourÃÂ belongings. There are barely a handfulÃÂ options available in our country evenÃÂ today when it comes to motorcycleÃÂ luggage unlike abroad. But ViaTerra plansÃÂ to take care of this with its range ofÃÂ motorcycle luggage, and we recently gotÃÂ to sample their saddlebags, known as theÃÂ ViaTerra Claw. The name comes from theÃÂ shape of the saddlebag and theÃÂ way it sits on the motorcycle.
The Claw was designedàwith the KTM 200 Dukeàin mind, but can fitàmost Indian motorcycles.àThe uniqueàshape combines theàutility of side bags andàa top box in a single unit.àThe disadvantage though is that it can beàused only when riding solo, since the bagàsits on the pillion seat. This however is anàadvantage for the rider as the bag acts asàa back rest, especially over extendedàhours of riding. Having said that filling theàbag to its capacity of 55 litres is quite aàtask, as even with nearly a week's worth ofàneeds you are still left with some spareàspace. The bag can easily take in a tripodàand a sleeping bag along with youràessentials. Mounting and strapping theàbag onto your motorcycle is easy and theàfastening system is the same as seen onàother similar products âÂ" you fasten theàbag onto the bike by securing the strapsàaround the rear grab handles andàfootpegs mounts/bungee points usingàthe double-D rings provided.
At the top there are two straps that can beÃÂ tightened and locked depending on howÃÂ much the bag is full. A set of rings areÃÂ provided at various points that allow theÃÂ use of a bungee net on top. The bag alsoÃÂ features two side pockets and a zipperÃÂ pouch on top for stowing away documents,ÃÂ maps etc. The zipper on topÃÂ could have been transparent asÃÂ it would have allowed one toÃÂ put in a cell phone or mapÃÂ and not have to open theÃÂ zipper to check. Both sideÃÂ pockets use reflectiveÃÂ strips on their flaps,ÃÂ aiding visibility from theÃÂ sides while reflective strips atÃÂ the back enhance visibility from the rearÃÂ in the dark. It also features a detachableÃÂ shoulder strap which is a thoughtfulÃÂ feature as it allows you to carry the bagÃÂ once off the motorcycle with ease, butÃÂ Velcro strips on the three straps thatÃÂ fasten the bag onto the bike would haveÃÂ been nice as they are left hanging onceÃÂ the bag is taken off. The design andÃÂ capacity of the bag are its biggestÃÂ advantages, since the bag allows you toÃÂ carry a whole lot of stuff in a single bag.
The bags are priced at Rs 2900 and canÃÂ be ordered online at www.viaterra.in
