First-ever automatic transmission Yamaha MT-09 to be unveiled later this year
Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. has introduced the new Y-AMT (Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission), an automatic transmission system for motorcycles. The Y-AMT eliminates the need for a clutch lever and shift pedal. The new system will make its debut in the new MT-09, which is set to be released in Japan by the end of this year.
The Y-AMT automates clutch and gearshift operations using complex electronic controls, consolidating these functions into a lever on the handlebars for more intuitive gear changes. It features two modes: manual MT mode and automatic AT mode. In MT mode, riders can manually operate the lever to shift gears, while AT mode automates gear changes based on road conditions, rider preferences, and weather. Both modes offer quick responses and consistent gear changes, ensuring sporty performance without compromise.
It is to be noted that Yamaha first developed an automated manual transmission system for motorcycles in 2006 with the Yamaha Chip Controlled Shift (YCC-S). And the new Y-AMT builds on this foundation. As claimed, the Y-AMT aims to improve the riding experience by providing more freedom to focus on braking, cornering, and accelerating.
It automates gear changes using actuators controlled by the engine control unit (ECU) and motor control unit (MCU). This coordination ensures smooth and quick gear shifts, reducing shift shock and providing a natural shifting feel. Meanwhile, the Y-AMT is said to be lightweight, slim, and compact, weighing approximately 2.8 kg.
