If you are familiar with Harley-Davidson motorcycles, you would know that the Road King had disappeared from the company's lineup for over a year. Currently, it is back on sale as the Project Rushmorified Road King. Under the guise of the Project Rushmore, Harley-Davidson works on making their entire range of big motorcycles better and more user-friendly. The changes made include brighter lights all round and major updates to interface elements like saddlebags. The mechanical changes included the addition of an oil-cooler on the new 1690cc TwinCam 103 engine. These changes have been incorporated on the Road King. Here is an image gallery of 2016 Harley-Davidson Road King

See that little switch at the bottom of the switch set? That's cruise control. Above that are the horn, and head light beam controls underlined by the right side indicator. On the Harley-Davison Road King the digital readout toggle moved to the front where you might normally find the day flash toggle switch

The big chrome knob on the Harley-Davidson Road King tank is used to switch the motorcycle on. A keyless fob that remains in your pocket takes care of security

Like many Harleys, the Harley-Davidson Road King's tank top speedo looks very simple but that little digital readout shows loads of information, one line at a time. The idiot lights can be hard to see when wearing a full face helmet, though

The Harley-Davidson Road King's fake gas tank cap on the left houses a small fuel gauge

The Harley-Davidson Road King uses footboards with a standard heel-toe shifter. We aren't fans of the heel shifter - it gets in the way of placing feet on the footboard on long runs when some variation helps circulation

The paint and finish quality of the Harley-Davidson Road King is just class leading

The Harley-Davidson Road King triple headlight looks fantastic and Harley-Davidson promise nearly 1000 lumens of light

The front fender looks very familiar and wears a neat Road King logo. The Touring family bikes, including the Harley-Davidson Road King use dual compound Dunlop tyres

The new Harley-Davidson Road King's TwinCam 103 engine uses oil cooling on the Touring family models, adds a counterbalancer and ride by wire

The old Harley-Davidson Road King used this chrome detail as a locking handle. The new ones are much easier to operate

The rear of the Harley-Davidson Road King looks very cool rumbling down the highway with its swept back bags and studded seat. It's an extremely comfy highway motorcycle too

The Harley-Davidson Road King windscreen attaches and detaches within seconds without tools. I found it caused buffeting past 130kmph with discomfort starting at 115kmph. Given our weather though, it's probably not very useful in the bigger picture

The 2016 Harley-Davidson Road King has many refinements and updates includes fatter 43mm forks and air-adjustable rear shocks

The Harley-Davidson Road King barrel key can be used to lock the handlebars on the 2016 model and the lovely chrome boss is a great sight as you cruise the highways

The Harley-Davidson Road King mirrors looks short of stalk, but work very well. Harley's typical switch gear places the engine kill switch, thumb starter and hazard lights above the right side indicator. The Road King has two blank switches below all this

The Project Rushmore led to these Harley-Davidson Road King panniers that are far easier to use. A simple lever on the inner side, when unlocked, allows you to release and open the lid

The Harley-Davidson Road King looks great. Dark colours set off the surfeit of chrome perfectly and while you can argue the usefulness of the windshield in our hot weather, it certainly looks great

Long, low, loaded, slammed and sweet, the Harley-Davidson Road King has great road presence and is as comfortable for all-day riding as it looks
