A crossover is as much about its butch looks as it is about the performance - it's more than a hatchback but not quite a full-blown SUV. Our review of the S-Cross allowed us to take a good look at all that makes it more 'premium' than the other offerings from the leading Indian carmaker.
Apart from the mock scuff plates and the all round cladding, the design is more hatchback than SUV
The side isn't the most appealing view of the car but it still is a smart design
The low nose and the long front overhang add to the leaping stance. The shoulder line is angular too and flows like a wave and straightens after the mirror
The twin slat chrome grille debuts in the Indian S-Cross
16-inch alloy wheels (in top variants) feature multiple spokes and end up almost covering the entire section, looking more hub cap like in the process. The Euro-spec gets 17-inchers
The large headlamps feature projector lighting and LED daylight running lamps too
The fog lamps get a chrome surround
Roof rails are in line with the crossover styling norm
The angular tail lamps (no LEDs here) are attractive and are a split type unit like in the EcoSport, a thick number plate garnish and an almost fully black rear bumper give it the soft roader look
The 1.6-litre diesel engine makes its debut in India with the S-Cross
A 3-D badge under the left-hand side tail lamp adds to the bling on the rear
The all-black interior is fresh and stylish while the design approach is very European
There is a sense of familiarity thanks to the steering and a few shared parts
There are a few extra controls too like the cruise control switch
Controls to make and receive calls via bluetooth are located at the lower left corner of the steering wheel
Twin cup holders are located just behind the gearstick. Centre armrest doubles up as storage bin
The centre console is shaped like a hexagon and houses the touchscreen audio-visual navigation unit borrowed from the Ciaz
Blue backlit instrumentation is a first in a Maruti
The row of switches to the right of the engine start-stop button look outdated
Decent leg room at the rear. Note twin cup holders in centre arm rest. Leather finished seats are available in the top spec
The rear seats split or completely fold for added convenience - maximum cargo space is a decent 810 litres
353 litre boot with the seats in the upright position
Push button start-stop function is only available in the top end variant
1.6-litre diesel produces 120PS and 320Nm
The 1.6-litre variant comes with a 6-speed manual transmission
