Indian-made Suzuki Ignis scores three stars in global NCAP
An Indian-made Suzuki Ignis, for the African market and tested under NCAP's Safer Cars for Africa initiative, has scored three tsrats in the crash tests conducted by the safety ratings body. The African car tested here came with two airbags, ABS, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
NCAP's tests showed that the protection offered to the driver's and passenger's head and neck was good. Passenger chest protection was also adequate but the driver's chest and knees were only weakly and moderately protected. Further, the tests deemed bodyshell as unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings. In child protection tests, good protection to head
and chest were offered to both 18 month and three-year-old children. The Ignis only scored one star in this category though because the manufacturer did not recommend a Child Restraint System and it was for Global NCAP to decide which CRS to be used. Further, The car does not offer three-point belts in all seating positions.
The Indian-spec Ignis differs slightly from the model tested. It gets more standard safety kit. There's a passenger-side seatbelt reminder, rear parking sensors, a speed alert system, as standard, apart from the kit already present in the African car.
Mechanically, the Indian Ignis get the 1.2-litre K-series petrol motor with its 83PS and 113Nm. This is paired with a five-speed manual or AMT.
