Lamborghini Urus to come with a plug-in hybrid
We have already mentioned the list of exciting cars that are arriving in 2017. And now there is an exotic addition to that list. Exotic supercar manufacturer Lamborghini has just confirmed that the Urus will be unveiled next year and will make it into production in 2018. In addition to it being the second SUV from the company after a hiatus of more than a decade, this will be the first Lamborghini to be powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Lamborghini had showcased the Urus concept at the Beijing Auto Show on April 23, 2012. The Italian manufacturer had already mentioned that the Urus will produce a power output in the range of 600PS. It has now been confirmed that the Lamborghini Urus will be powered by a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8. This is the first time in the company's history that a turbo would be used instead of a naturally aspirated motor. The reason for that is the greater low-end torque that will also make the Urus the fastest SUV on the planet, claims the company. The company clearly mentions that, at the time of launch, the Lamborghini Urus will only feature the plug-in hybrid powertrain and has no plans of getting pure electric versions. In addition to the petrol-powered plug-in hybrid, there can be a diesel motor doing duty on entry-level versions.
The Lamborghini Urus will be based on the same platform that underpins the new-age Audi Q7 as well as the Bentley Bentayga. The other unique feature of this Lamborghini SUV is that it will use a 48V electric motor for its active anti-roll suspension. In this system, the stiffness level is adjusted to reduce body roll during cornering at high speeds.
In terms of design, the Lamborghini Urus will retain most of its design cues from the original concept, states the brand. On the contrary, it is believed to look more aggressive and will feature a far more modern interior compared to the concept. The Lamborghini Urus will be manufactured at the Sant'Agata plant in Italy. The annual production volume could conceivably be around 3,000 vehicles. Target markets are primarily the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, the Middle East and China.
