Mahindra Thar 5-door will be launched on August 15

After what seems to be forever, we finally have some good news on the Mahindra Thar 5-door. The Thar 5-door will officially be unveiled in production-ready spec on August 15. This does not come as a surprise as it aligns with Mahindra's recent record of unveiling its products on India's Independence Day. Prices for the car will be announced a few weeks later.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Naming and Exterior

The Thar 5-door is envisioned as a more practical incarnation of the conventional Thar, combining its toughness with more usefulness. Mahindra trademarked several names for the upcoming SUV, including Thar, Armada, Cult, Rex, Savannah, Roxx, Gladius, and Centurion. Of these, the Armada seems to be the most likely to be used. For those who are unfamiliar, Mahindra launched the Armada, a 4-door SUV with a 5-door configuration, in the 1990s.

Mahindra has obviously extended the wheelbase for the 5-door variant, allowing the introduction of rear doors. From the spy images that we've seen, the door handles are mounted on the C-pillars and not in the conventional spot.

The pictures show that the new five-door Thar will feature all-LED lighting, including LED projector headlights, indicators, and re-profiled taillamps. Additionally, it will sport a redesigned front grille. Unlike the round rear wheel arches of the three-door model, the five-door version will feature squared-off wheel arches at the rear. The Mahindra five-door Thar may also introduce a new set of alloy wheels and rear-wheel disc brakes.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Powertrain

The five-door Thar is likely to carry forward the same powertrains as the three-door version, which includes a 2.0-litre mStallion engine producing 152PS and 300Nm of torque (320Nm with AT) and a 2.2-litre mHawk engine generating 132PS and 300Nm of torque. However, it may instead benefit from more potent diesel and petrol versions offered with the Scorpio-N, producing 175PS/370Nm of torque (400Nm with AT) and 200PS and 370Nm of torque (380Nm with AT), respectively.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Interior and Safety

The 10.25-inch infotainment unit seen on the recently updated XUV400 and the 10.25-inch digital driver display from the XUV700 will both be onboard the upcoming off-road vehicle. The five-door Thar is expected to come equipped with a range of standard safety features, including six airbags, electronic stability program, hill hold and descent control, ABS with EBD, brake assist, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, three-point seat belts, and seatbelt reminders for all seats, among other features.

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is projected to be priced more than the Thar 3-door, which begins at Rs 11.25 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with the future Force Gurkha while offering a bigger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
