Maruti Suzuki achieves 2.5 million unit exports milestone
Maruti Suzuki has hit an important milestone of exporting 2.5 million units to various countries across the globe. Its export portfolio includes 16 models, including the recently launched Grand Vitara. The brand commenced exporting its vehicles from the country in 1986-87.
The first export markets were two Indian neighbours, Bangladesh and Nepal, while the first large consignment consisting of 500 units was shipped to Hungary in September 1987. Presently, Maruti Suzuki exports its made-in-India cars to about 100 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East regions.
In January 2023, the carmaker began exporting the Grand Vitara to Latin America. the first batch was shipped from the Kamarajar port in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Overall, Maruti's export portfolio comprises 16 models. Out of these, the Swift, Baleno, Brezza, Dzire, and S-Presso were the highest exported models in CY 2022. In fact, the brand even reported record-breaking exports in the calendar year 2022 at 263,068 units.
Commenting on the occasion, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, "The landmark export of 2.5 million vehicles stands as a testimony to India's manufacturing prowess. This feat demonstrates Maruti Suzuki's resolute commitment to the Government of India's flagship make-in-India initiative, and furthering government's efforts to enhance vehicle exports."
