Maruti Suzuki Gujarat plant reaches 30 lakh vehicle production mark
Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), a subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, has crossed a 30 lakh unit production milestone after six years and 11 months of its operations commencement in February 2017. Not only does the plant produces vehicles for domestic sales but also for exports. In fact, the manufacturing of the export models begun in March 2018.
The facility, located in Hansalpur, Gujarat, has an annual production capacity of 7.50 lakh units every year. Spread across three different sections: plant A, plant B, and plant C, the first 10 lakh unit production milestone was achieved in October 2020, followed by 20 lakh unit production mark crossed in August 2022. Notably, the last 10 lakh units were manufactured in about 17 months. Maruti currently makes the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Fronx, and Tour S, models at the facility.
Commenting on the occasion, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, "With the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, we are further enhancing our production flexibility. The production of our battery electric vehicles will also be undertaken at the Gujarat plant and is expected to start in FY 2024-25. At present, the facility manufactures some of the popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire and Fronx. Aligned to the Government's 'Make-in-India' vision, 50 per cent of the vehicles manufactured at SMG in FY 2022-23 were exported to global markets."
In other news, Maruti Suzuki Board of Directors recently approved the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat from Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Japan. Suzuki Motor Gujarat was previously a wholly owned subsidiary of the SMC.
