Mercedes-Benz CLE debuts as the C-class and E-class Coupe successor

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the CLE, a sleek new two-door model.d. The CLE has an elegant, streamlined style, two electric powertrains, and a tech-focused interior inspired by the C-class and E-class sedans. The CLE is built on Mercedes-Benz's MRA platform, which shares components with both the fifth-generation C-Class and the newly introduced sixth-generation E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz CLE: Design and Dimensions

The CLE is longer than both the C- and E-Class coups and offers much greater room than the C-Class Coup, measuring 4,850mm long, 1,860mm wide, and 1,428mm high.

With a streamlined shape, a C-Class-like front grille, a significantly curved roof, and a sloping boot lid inside a tapered rear end, the external appearance builds on the current E-Class coupe. The grille is made up of dozens of small three-pointed Mercedes-Benz stars. Mercedes-Benz bodywork is typical, with smooth, flowing surfaces accented by crisp lines along the side and sculpted bumpers.

The wheels range from a standard 18-inch alloy, up to an optional 20-inch rim. The integrated rear taillight bar is reminiscent of the company's all-electric EQ products, but the CLE retains a typical car-like design. The boot size is 420 litres, which is 20 litres less than its direct competitor, the BMW 4 Series coup.

Mercedes-Benz CLE: Powertrains

The rear-wheel-drive CLE 200d is the first in the lineup, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 197PS and 440 Nm of torque. The rear-wheel-drive CLE 200 joins it, with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 204PS and 320 Nm of torque. The same engine is utilized in the four-wheel-drive CLE 300 4Matic producing a total of 258PS and 400Nm.

The four-wheel-drive CLE 450 4Matic is the top model in the regular lineup. It gets a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with 380PSp and 500 Nm of torque for a stated 0-100kmph time of 4.4sec and a peak speed of 250kmph.

Each engine has 48V mild-hybrid capabilities, with a gearbox-mounted electric motor giving an extra 23PS and 200 Nm of torque for brief periods of acceleration. A nine-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox is standard on all versions. In Europe, the CLE 200 may be specified with 4Matic all-wheel drive alongside the CLE 300 4Matic and CLE 450 4Matic.

Mercedes-Benz CLE: Interior

The cabin resembles that of the existing C-class, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch central touchscreen tilted slightly toward the driver, as well as the same circular air vents. The steering wheel has a flat bottom and is coated in leather, while the front seats are heated and have four-way lumbar support as standard. Optional features include seat ventilation and a seven-zone massage function.

There's a 64-colour ambient lighting system as well as standard Burnmester surround sound with Dolby Atmos, which comprises two speakers embedded in each front seat. A low-set bench with two separate seats on either side is installed in the back. Mercedes-Benz characterizes the entrance technology as "easy-entry," which is activated by pulling a leather strap within the sides of the front seats.

Should the new Mercedes CLE make its way to India? We expect it will most probably come here next year but will be slightly more expensive than we would expect it to be.
