Mercedes unveil the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE as the first performance hybrid from Mercedes-AMG
With technology derived from their Formula 1 race car, Mercedes-AMG is all set to start production of its first-ever hybrid performance car. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is said to combine outstanding performance and impressive driving dynamics with maximum efficiency thanks to its distinctive drive layout with an electric motor and battery on the rear axle as well as a high-performance battery.
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance houses the famous 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine from AMG, is combined with an electric motor to produce a staggering 855PS and a maximum torque of 1400 Nm. Mercedes claims that the GT 63 S E Performance will accelerate from a standstill to 100 kmph in 2.9 seconds and will reach 200 kmph in under 10 seconds. The car will top off its speedometer at 316 kmph.
The electric motor itself in the GT 63 S E Performance produces 207PS and 320 Nm of torque.
"With the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE we are transporting our brand DNA into an electrified future. In doing so, we are following our own technical path, which is what has always made AMG so special and desirable. Developed entirely in Affalterbach, the performance hybrid offers a fascinating level of driving dynamics and rightly bears our new technology label E PERFORMANCE. With this new concept, we are also opening up to new target groups who will experience Mercedes-AMG as the performance luxury brand of the 21st century," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
From a design perspective, the GT 63 S E Performance isn't all that different from its sibling the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+. The four-door coup's athletic characteristics are highlighted by the expressive design, which includes a low front section, muscular body, squat greenhouse, and dynamic fastback. The distinctive front apron, which is based on the design of the two-door AMG GT, is another eye-catching element. The exterior air intakes are larger and more angled toward the car's centre. Three vertical fins route the airflow to the wheel arch coolers.
The rear apron with integrated plug-in charging flap and the model identifier highlighted in red are unique identifying characteristics. AMG is also integrating outwardly fluted trapezoidal dual exhaust tailpipes with the hybrid. The hybrid drive is indicated by the "E PERFORMANCE" logo on the wings. There is also a new set of 20 and 21-inch light-alloy wheels, each in two colour variants.
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance comes equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with a new dampening system. The modified AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system and the MBUX multimedia system with unique hybrid displays are also standard.
The MBUX multimedia system with AMG hybrid-specific displays and functions is standard in the Widescreen Cockpit. The driver will see the electric range, power consumption, output and torque of the electric motor, and battery and electric motor temperatures in the instrument cluster. Exclusive interior leather colours emphasise AMG GT 63 S E Performance sporty or luxury aspect.
The development of the lithium-ion battery was influenced by technologies that have previously established themselves in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team's Formula 1 hybrid racing vehicles under the most extreme circumstances. During development, the High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1 engine shop in Brixworth and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach had a dynamic exchange of professional information. The AMG high-performance battery combines high power that can be called up quickly with minimal weight to boost the vehicle's overall performance.
