New Toyota Prius to be launched in India in January 2017

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has finally confirmed that the new Prius hybrid will be launched in India in January 2017. Toyota first showcased the new hybrid at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, and we got its first glimpse at the Auto Expo 2016.

The refreshed hybrid is powered by an updated Hybrid Synergy Drive that combines a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder DOHC VVT-I engine and an electric motor. The powertrain is mated to an e-CVT and generates 98PS of power at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 3,600rpm.

The new Prius is the first car based on Toyota's new shared platform â€" Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). The carmaker claims that TNGA's lower centre of gravity along with an updated suspension package will give customers a better driving experience.

The new Prius also gets several cosmetic changes both in exterior and interior. For example, the grille houses active shutters that controls airflow and reduces aerodynamic drag. As far as interior goes, the hybrid features a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, touchscreen infotainment system, new automatic climate control system and colour head-up display (HUD).

The new Prius is 60mm longer, 15mm wider and 20mm lower than its predecessor, which makes more room for luggage and passengers, and Toyota claims that the new Prius will increase fuel efficiency by 10 per cent and thermal efficiency by 40 per cent.

Although Toyota hasn't confirmed its price yet, we expect the 2017 Prius to be priced between Rs 30-40 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
