Nissan could be reducing its workforce by 10,000 globally

Japanese automobile major Nissan could be cutting down its workforce by 10,000 globally, as reported by Kyodo News. The news agency mentions that these job cuts will be in addition to the early retirement options that Nissan had mentioned of in May this year giving a number of 4,800 globally. The total work strength of Nissan is around 1.39 lakh employees around the world. It is being said that the job cuts are expected to not take place in Japan but outside of it. This has made many believe that work strength at Nissan's UK centre in Sunderland could be axed. It has been already facing heat due to the uncertainty of Brexit. We reached out to Nissan India to find out if the company's India operations could get affected. However, the whole news was termed as speculation.

Reuters mentions that a confirmed announcement would be shared by the company when it publishes its first-quarter earnings on Thursday and there will be no comments on the job losses before that. Nissan had been already facing a decline in sales in Europe and the United States. The timing too is not in favour of the company considering the arrest of Carlos Ghosn. the former Nissan boss due to misconduct. Even its partnership with Renault is under stress as the latter owns 43 per cent stage of Nissan and is also going through a complete transformation to strengthen the company post the Ghosn charges.
