One millionth BMW GS rolled out; New R 1300 GS global debut on 28 Sep

Bavarian two-wheeler manufacturer BMW has achieved a historic milestone of one millionth GS rolling out of its production line at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau. On the occasion, the bike maker also announced that it will introduce the all-new R 1300 GS worldwide at the opening ceremony of the new BMW Motorrad Welt in Berlin on 28 September, 2023. Meanwhile, the 1,000,000th unit that rolled out of the facility was the R 1250 GS painted in Triple Black Style.

The R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure are the well-liked adventure tourers around the world. Both models were major contributors to the overall sales of the BMW Motorrad in the previous calendar year. In fact, the bike maker sold 60,000 units of the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure in 2022. The ADVs were also in demand in India the last year. Meanwhile, the R 1250 GS competes against the likes of the Ducati Multistrada V4, Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250, Honda Africa Twin, Triumph Tiger 1200, and KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.

The all-new R 1300 GS will be the successor to the R 1250 GS. It will be powered by a new 1,300cc, boxer-twin, liquid-cooled engine with BMW's ShiftCam system. It is believed that the upcoming R 1300 GS will generate around 145PS. This motor will come mated to a six-speed gearbox.

The R 1300 GS has been spotted testing overseas on multiple occasions. If the spy shots are to go by, the new R 1300 GS is likely to bear the same imposing stance as its predecessor but with a sleeker and sportier design language. One of the most significant additions to the new ADV will be a radar-based cruise control system similar to the Ducati Multistrada.

Other features and equipment could include electronically adjustable suspension, all-LED lighting, an upgraded TFT colour instrument console, various riding modes, traction control, ride-by-wire, ABS, a slipper and assist clutch, quick-shifter, blind spot monitoring, keyless ignition, hill start assist, larger disc brakes, and crash alert, among others. It would not be surprising if BMW introduced innovative new features.

"I am very pleased that today, and especially in our "100 Years of BMW Motorrad" anniversary year, we are able to contribute a major milestone to the corporate history of the BMW Group with the one millionth BMW GS motorbike with a boxer engine. I am equally pleased that the unique history of BMW Motorrad models with boxer engines will soon be supplemented by an exciting chapter with numerous innovations with the new R 1300 GS," said Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad.

While BMW has manufactured its motorcycles at the Berlin plant since 1969, production of the GS models with boxer engines began in 1980. Back in 1980, BMW Motorrad showcased the R 80 G/S: a motorcycle capable of handling both off- and on-road terrains. Powering the bike was a 798cc engine producing 50PS. Over the last four decades, the GS moniker transcended into a world-renowned touring motorcycle th:e BMW R 1250 GS.
