Post Tavera recall, heads roll at GM

General Motors has fired top officials of its Indian arm and also a few abroad due to the Tavera recall. Just a week ago the Indian subsidiary of General Motors, announced the recall of its MPV, the Tavera, owing to "inconsistencies in emission results". This also saw the government order a probe into the matter.

The Tavera faces tough competition from the Toyota Innova, Maruti, Nissan Evalia and its own sister vehicle, the Chevrolet

The individuals have been sacked for "violating company policies" and include GM India CFO Anil Mehrotra, Ravi Desai, Director at General Motors (Greater Detroit Area), Ashwani Muppasani, former head of vehicle sales, servicing and marketing at GM India and Sheila Jain Sarver, who headed GM's India technical centre at Bangalore.

"General Motors' investigation into our recall of the Chevrolet Tavera, which is built and sold exclusively in India, identified violations of company policy. GM subsequently dismissed several employees," said a company statement.

The Tavera faces tough competition from the Toyota Innova, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Nissan Evalia and its own sister vehicle, the Chevrolet Enjoy. It will require a particularly tough response from GM to come out clean and re-establish its credentials in the market.

This may only be the start, now that more names are under the scanner. "We take these matters very seriously and hold our leaders and employees to high standards," said GM.
