Production-ready Alfa Romeo Tonale mid-size SUV to be unveiled soon
The Jeep-derived Alfa Romeo Tonale mid-size SUV is finally ready for its global unveiling on February 8th 2022, after delays reportedly caused due to reasons ranging from a reworking of its brand-first plug-in hybrid powertrain, to the global chip shortage. The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the brand's second SUV and will sit below the Alfa Romeo Stelvio in the line-up, with its name being derived from an Italian mountain pass, just as the Stelvio's name was. Powertrain options are expected to include petrol, diesel, and in a first for Alfa, a PHEV option borrowed from elsewhere in the Stellantis range, namely from the Jeep Compass/Renegade 4xe variants.ÃÂ
The latter powertrain combines a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine with twin electric motors for AWD, with the choice of two power outputs âÂ" 190PS or 240PS, though it is likely the line-up will also include front-wheel driven models. The PHEV uses an 11.4kWh battery, capable of providing up to 50km of electric-only driving.ÃÂ
First shown at the 2019 Geneva Auto Show, there's big hopes riding on the Alfa Tonale, which is expected to help the brand hit lofty sales targets in the coming years and become the best-seller for Alfa in the process. The production model is reported to be very close to the concept model shown earlier, with elements like the triple headlamps (inspired by models like the Alfa Brera), telephone dial wheels, and dashboard lines carrying over.
