Spec comparison: 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63S Vs BMW M5 Competition
Soon after the launch of the facelifted 2021 BMW M5 Competition, Mercedes is here with the revised 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63S. We pit both the super saloons together on paper to see which one excels over the other.
Mercedes-Benz recently facelifted the E-Class and the souped-up 53 and 63 models were launched later. While the design is pretty much similar to the regular E-Class, the sporty bumpers, flared wheel arches, AMG rims and quad exhausts are the key changes. The redesigned front end and splitter help to reduce drag at the front axle. The extended track and bigger 20-inch wheels give it amazing cornering capabilities. The redesigned rear profile features new LED taillights, a carbon lip spoiler and quad exhaust pipes. In a nutshell, the new E63s looks far more subtle and sporty than the pre-facelifted model.
BMW M5 Competition is also very similar to the recently launched BMW 5-Series facelift. It features a new single-piece kidney grille flanked by BMW Laser LED lights. As it's the M5, we get larger air intakes, flared wheel arches to accommodate larger track width and M alloy wheels. On the back, the smooth LED taillights are smoked and the quad exhaust pipes are finished in black chrome. The M5 Competition catches an extra share of eyeballs thanks to its bolder design whereas the Mercedes-AMG E 63S takes a more sophisticated design approach.
2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63S Vs BMW M5 Competition - Interiors
Both the sedans boast perceptible changes on the outside but you need some keen eyes to find the changes made on the inside. Talking of the Mercedes-AMG E 63S, it gets a redesigned steering wheel that gets split twin spokes featuring capacitive controls. Like the pre-facelifted model, the dashboard is taken by twin-connected screens with the latest MBUX software. The AMG character is reinforced by sports seats, carbon fibre inserts and generous use of Nappa leather. The new steering also features configurable mode selectors with individual displays along with aluminium paddle shifters.
BMW M5 Competition leaves no chance to flaunt its sporty quotient. The dashboard is draped in bespoke Merino upholstery with three shade options. The front sports seats feature integrated headrests with an illuminated M5 logo. Like every other Competition model, the M5 does away with the sunroof and gets a carbon fibre roof in favour of weight reduction. The updated iDrive infotainment takes the centre stage whereas the intuitive driver's display features updated layouts.
2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63S Vs BMW M5 Competition - Engine and Performance
Mercedes-AMG E 63S continues to come with a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine paired with 4Matic+. In the new model, the engine churns out 612 PS and 850 Nm of torque. In the comfort mode, the E63s also features cylinder deactivation technology and can run on four cylinders to boost efficiency. Sending the power to the wheels is a 9-speed MCT gearbox that is tuned for faster multiple downshifts. Thanks to the clever 4Matic+ system, the E63s can do 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.4 seconds. If you want to shred some rubber, AMG also offers the drift mode that completely cuts power to the front axle.
The M5 Competition continues to draw power from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. In the Competition spec, it produces 625PS and 750 Nm of torque. The M5 Competition also features an AWD system that can decouple the front axle, making it an absolute tyre shredder. Thanks to the stupendous grip, the M5 Competition does 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.3 seconds that is one-tenth of a second faster than the E63s. However, unlike the E63s that comes with air suspension, the M5 Competition only gets adaptive dampers.
