Suzuki lays out electrification plan; six EVs coming to India by 2030
Suzuki Motor Corporation has revealed a long-term electrification plan for the Indian market. It aims to launch the first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) in the country in 2025, followed by the arrival of six new EVs by 2030.
As a part of the plan, Suzuki will introduce its first-ever electric vehicle based on the eVX concept in India sometime in 2025, which debuted at the Auto Expo 2023. The production-ready eVX will be a crossover SUV. It will likely measure 4,300mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,600mm in height to come under the compact SUV segment. For instance, the Kia Seltos measures 4,315mm in length. The EV could preview Suzuki's direction in terms of design language for its future offerings. Regarding the powertrain, Maruti's first EV is expected to provide a travel range of about 550km with an estimated battery pack capacity between 60kWh to 70kWh.
A statement released by Maruti Suzuki said, "In India, we will introduce the SUV battery EV announced at the Auto Expo 2023 in FY2024, with six models to be launched by FY2030." "Based on the target date set by each government, Suzuki aims to achieve carbon neutrality in Japan and Europe by 2050 and in India by 2070," it added.
With this, Suzuki expects battery electric vehicles to constitute 15 per cent of the total vehicle sales, and 25 per cent of sales from hybrid electric cars in India by 2020. In addition, it expects 60 per cent of its sales to come from internal combustion engine (ICE) automobiles. Not to mention, Suzuki also intends to provide environmentally-friendly ICE vehicles powered by CNG, biogas, and ethanol-mixed fuels.
Apart from its plans to introduce four-wheeler EVs in Europe, Japan, India and other countries, Suzuki will also unveil its first two-wheeler EV, most probably an electric scooter, in 2025 in global markets. The brand plans to introduce eight new electric two-wheelers by 2030. Meanwhile, the Burgman 125-based electric scooter is said to be under development for several years, while its prototype has been spotted testing in India on a few occasions. Additionally, its patent details have also already been leaked on the internet. That said, Suzuki is set to introduce its first four- and two-wheeler EVs globally, especially in India, by the first half of this decade.
