Tata Indica and Indigo eCS production discontinued in India

The Tata Indica was an important offering for the Indian automobile manufacturer as it marked the entry of Tata Motors in the passenger vehicle segment to challenge the dominance of Maruti Suzuki. Launched in the country in 1998, the Tata Indica was India's first indigenously developed passenger car. This was then followed by the launch of the Tata Indigo in 2002. Owing to low sales and stiff competition, Tata Motors have now phased out both these models from its Indian portfolio.

As reported by ETAuto, a Tata Motors dealer from the North also confirmed this development by stating that the production and sales of the Indica and the Indigo have been stopped. As per SIAM figures, Tata Motors has sold 2,583 units of Indica and 1,756 units of Indigo in the fiscal year 2018. Both the models were not produced or sold in April 2018. The company will be clearing all the available stocks at dealerships. Tata Motors reported a growth of 22 percent in April 2018 with a sales of 187,321 units compared to the same last year, which is a result of the success of new age products like the Hexa, Nexon, Tiago and the Tigor.

"With the changing market dynamics and the evolution of Tata Motors design language towards impactful design, we have decided to phase out the Indica and the Indigo eCS, a common phenomenon in a product lifecycle" commented a Tata Motors spokesperson Even though both the cars have been discontinued from the Indian market, Tata Motors will continue to provide sales and service support.

It is said that the Tata Indica project was very important for Ratan Tata as he wanted to make a car that would have the dimensions of a Maruti Suzuki Zen, cabin space of an Ambassador and the fuel efficiency of Maruti Suzuki 800. All of these attributes were met in the Tata Indica resulting in a booking of over 1 lakh units in the very first year of its launch in India.
