Tata Nexon diesel likely to get new dual-clutch automatic transmission
Tata Motors' one of the most sought-after offerings, the Nexon, is expected to get a dual-clutch automatic transmission for its diesel engine. Details regarding a new powertrain combination were disclosed through a leaked image from Tata's online vehicle configurator.
The upcoming Curvv will be powered by three distinctive engine options, inclduing a new 1.2-litre TGDi engine. All three units, comprising petrol and diesel, will be mated to a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, including the 1.5-litre diesel motor. More to the point, the leaked picture reveals that when selected diesel-powered Nexon, the configurator shows several transmission options, including DCA, which is the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic unit. This gearbox option, according to the leaked image, is available with the range-topping Fearless+ S variant of the sub-compact SUV. Tata Motors introduced the dual-clutch automatic transmission with the Altroz. Then, it launched the same transmission in the Nexon facelift's 1.2-litre petrol engine.
Currently, the Nexon gets a 1.2-litre, inline three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine genrating 120PS and 170Nm of torque and 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor that makes 115PS and 260Nm. Transmission options include a six-speed manual, an AMT, and a seven-speed DCT automatic with shift-by-wire technology (petrol-only). While AMT cars are more affordable compared with DCT-equipped vehicles, the latter offer better performance and quick shifts. But AMT is said to offer greater fuel efficiency.
If Tata launches the Nexon diesel DCA, that would command a higher premium over the on-sale variants. The diesel AMT variant prices range between Rs 11.80-15.80 lakh (ex-showroom).
