Tata Nexon SUV becomes first Indian-origin car to score five-star Global NCAP rating
The Tata Nexon has become the car from an Indian brand to score the full five stars in the Global NCAP crash test. The sub-four meter SUV has earlier scored a four star rating but the firm has added a seatbelt reminder as standard to the 2019 model year car to help it get the improved rating.
The Nexon scored three stars in child safety protection and five stars for adult safety protection. The NCAP testing showed that the Nexon offered good adult head and neck protection. There was marginal protection for the driver's chest and adequate protection for passenger's chest. The cars three-star child safety rating can be attributed to the fact that the 18 month old child dummy had good protection while the three year old child passenger had high exposure in chest and head areas. Global NCAP has rated the Nexon's body-shell integrity as stable in the 64kph offset deformable barrier crash test like it did earlier.
The Nexon scored 16.06 points out of the total 17, an improvement over the earlier test's 13.56. This bump can also be attributed to Nexon now having passed a side-impact test meeting UN95 side-impact protection requirements. The child safety scores remained unchanged. This result is valid for all Tata Nexons made after December 7, 2018.
David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP, commenting on the Nexon's success, "This is a huge landmark for car safety in India. Congratulations to Tata Motors for achieving India's first five star rating for adult occupant protection. The Nexon was engineered in India and this shows the huge capability of the domestic industry to achieve excellence in safety design and performance. With the Nexon, Tata has shown the global car industry that to achieve five stars, you can 'Make in India'. Global NCAP is looking forward to many more Indian five star cars and further improvements in both, pedestrian protection and crash avoidance."
