Tata Zest launched at Rs 4.64 lakh: Prices and variants revealed

We've been looking at the Zest closely this month. With its base variant priced at Rs 4.64 lakh (ex-Delhi) and the top diesel trim going up to Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-Delhi) , it might just be what Tata Motors needs to dispel the slump it's been riding for about two years.

The new Tata Zest comes in five variants - XE, XM, XMA, XMS and top-spec XT, which in its 1.3-litre diesel avatar is the only trim to get AMT.

The Zest has been drawn from the ground up, keeping all of Tata Motors' baggage from the past aside. The Zest comes with a choice of one petrol and two diesel engines and that gives the car a versatile customer appeal. The petrol is an all-new turbocharged unit, displacing 1,193cc. Tata Motors likes to claim that this is the first turbocharged engine in the segment. This fact is a tad murky because Ford has the 1.0-litre Ecoboost and Volkswagen, the 1.2-litre TSI, both turbocharged fuel injected engines, though to be fair to the Zest, neither of the cars these engines power belong in this segment.

The 1.2-litre Revotron petrol is a clean and smooth engine, found Bert, on a road in Goa. The turbo kicks in around 1,200rpm and that provides torque pretty early in the rev band. You get 90PS of max power at 5,000rpm and 140Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,500rpm which is par for the segment.

On the outside, the Zest gets 15-inch wheels and wrap-around LED tail lamps that are not fully in sync with the front but certainly stylish. There is a sliver of chrome above the registration plate too and the ORVMs are body coloured. All variants get turn indicators mounted on the ORVMs as standard.

Inside, there is a dual-tone dash. Gear-shift up/down indicator comes as standard on all variants. On the safety front, only the XMS and XT get dual front airbags.
