The entry level BMW 1 Series is now in its fourth generation
Lately, all we've been hearing about is EVs and SUVs. So for once, it feels good to hear that BMW has turned towards the 1 Series and decided to give it a generational update. The new hatchback gets a sharper-looking appearance and BMW has given it a more high-tech inside coupled with a powerful M135 xDrive variant.
Up front, the nose is noticeably leaner, with swept-back headlamps and a sharper, more angular surface. The broad kidney grilles lose their colour-coded middle strake, resulting in a single huge, vented panel on the car's nose. This section also houses the sensors and radars for the vehicle's driver assistance systems.
The all-new 1 Series is 4,361mm long, 1,800mm wide, 1,459mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,670mm. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 19 inches for the M135, which also has optional compound brakes. The back is also considerably different, with freshly designed taillights that are roughly the same size and form as those on the current X2 crossover.
2025 BMW 1 Series: Powertrain
The all-new 1 Series offers a variety of engine options. The diesel lineup includes the 118d and 120d, both equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and a 48V mild-hybrid system. The former produces 148PS with 360Nm of torque, whilst the latter produces 161PS with 400 Nm of torque.
The 120 will be driven by a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 168PS and 280Nm of torque. It will accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.8 seconds. The 1 Series now includes a 7-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox as standard.
The most powerful M135 xDrive variant will be the flagship car and will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that generates nearly 300PS and has 400Nm of torque. This one is also mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox but benefits from an all-wheel drive system. 0 to 100 kmph is easily achieved in 4.9 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph.
2025 BMW 1 Series: InteriorStepping inside, the cabin is vastly different from the previous model. The 2025 1 Series will have BMW's iDrive 9 infotainment system with twin displays. The digital instrument cluster measures 10.25 inches, while the touchscreen has a diagonal of 10.7 inches. BMW has also modified the shape of the air vents, although dual-zone automatic climate control is available.
Other changes include a new sports steering wheel (optional heated M Sport wheel with shift paddles) and revised seats. The inside is fully leather-free, with purchasers choosing to select 'Econeer' upholstery manufactured from recycled PET. The boot size remains constant from the previous 1 Series, but buyers may now select a 40:20:40 split-fold rear seat.
