Toyota D22 mid-size SUV to be revealed in India on July 1, expected to be called Hyryder
Toyota India will debut its new mid-size SUV for the Indian market on July 1. The new SUV, so far codenamed the D22, is expected to be named the Toyota Hyryder and will also spawn a Maruti Suzuki derivative soon after.
Toyota D22 Hyryder SUV exteriorsSpy images show that the new Toyota SUV will be about the same size as its Korean rivals, the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. The heavily camouflaged test mules seem to carry a wide and upright stance, a favourite in this segment. The bodywork should be fairly straightforward with a focus on interior room. There also seems to be sizeable ground clearance with the 17-inch wheels that these test mules seem to be riding on.
A notable observation is that there seem to be sizeable differences in frontal styling between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki version. While a split headlamp setup is apparent with LED lighting, the LED lighting signature seem to differ. The Maruti version may use a simpler split-LED design building from the new Baleno while the Toyota may carry a more aggressive design theme as seen on SUVs like the Corolla Cross and RAV4 globally. The grille openings also seem different with the Toyota version expected to get a large lower airdam to tie in with the brand's global design theme. At the rear, expect to see vertical LEd lighting, a blocky bootlid and chunky cladding.
Toyota D22 Hyryder SUV interiorsThe interiors of the new Toyota SUV haven't been seen but is expected to see a layered dash layout with quite a bit of tech. There should be the new 9.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple Carplay, a HUD, digital instrument cluster, cruise control, sunroof and so on. The Toyota and Maruti Suzuki version may be differentiated by different coloured trims and upholstery materials.
Toyota D22 Hyryder SUV engine, specificationsThis Toyota-Maruti Suzuki SUV's USP is expected to be the hybrid powertrain it will pack under the bonnet. This drivetrain has already debuted in the Euro-spec Suzuki Vitara and is a development of the 1.5-litre K15B petrol already available here. This hybrid system pairs the petrol motor with a 140V lithium-ion battery pack, and an electric motor. Another lithium-ion battery and a lead-acid battery are used to handle all auxiliary functions like like and air-conditioning.
In this iteration, power from the 1.5-litre motor has increased by 10PS to 115PS while torque is at 138 Nm. The electric motor adds another 33PS and 60Nm and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Base versions may continue with just the petrol motor and a manual gearbox.
Toyota D22 Hyryder SUV expected price, launch dateThe new mid-sized SUV is expected to be built by Toyota at its Bidadi facility which will then be supplied to Maruti Suzuki. The SUV should be priced between Rs 11 to 17 lakh for both versions and is expected to launch a month or so after its debut.
