Toyota Hilux with mild-hybrid functionality introduced in Europe
Japanese automaker Toyota has introduced its popular Hilux pickup with a mild-hybrid assisted powertrain in the European market. It claims to offer improved performance and better fuel efficiency compared to its ICE-only diesel model. The pickup is also likely to go on sale in other markets soon, such as Australia, Africa, and southeast Asia countries. That said, Toyota Motor Thailand will build the Hilux MHEV for the western market.
Toyota Hilux MHEV: HighlightsThe Hilux comes powered by a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine and producing 204PS. The diesel-only Hilux makes 420Nm of torque with MT and 500Nm with AT. The Hilux comes with a four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and limited slip differential.
It boasts improved torque assistance, regenerative braking, smoother start/stop transition, and above all up to 10 per cent better mileage as against diesel-only powertrains. As claimed, the 48V system enables a water wading capacity of 700mm. Meanwhile, Toyota also claims that the 48V system will not affect the Hilux's off-roading performance and towing and payload capacity, which stands at 3500kg and 1000kg, respectively.
The same 2.8-litre diesel engine is used in the on-sale Fortuner, which is also likely to be the next model from Toyota to feature mild-hybrid functionality. With this, the Fortuner is expected to offer enhanced torque assist, improved fuel economy, and regenerative braking like the Hilux mild-hybrid.
Toyota Hilux MHEV: India launchToyota has not made any announcement of the Hilux mid-hybrid coming to India. But since the pickup is available in the country, we expect the company to introduce the 48V version in the coming months. Currently, the diesel-only Hilux is priced between Rs 30.40 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 37.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
